It was a brutal awakening for defending Japan Rugby League One champions Toshiba Brave Lupus, who were trounced 46-0 by Saitama Wild Knights in the explosive season opener. Under the fresh leadership of Atsushi Kanazawa, who has taken over from Robbie Deans now an executive advisor, the Wild Knights displayed a formidable performance that left the rugby community buzzing. Deans’ strategic shift seems promising as Kanazawa led the team to a victory even without key players like Damian de Allende and Lood de Jager.

The Wild Knights set the tone early, with captain Atsushi Sakate diving over for the first try 14 minutes into the game, following Takuya Yamazawa’s penalty kick. The scoreboard kept ticking thanks to Yamazawa’s boot and tries from Viliami Afu Kaipouli and Tom Parton, propelling the Knights to a commanding 33-0 lead by halftime. Yamazawa, particularly impressive, racked up 26 points by the end of the match including another penalty and a conversion for Lachlan Boshier’s try in the second half.

"It’s a fantastic start to the season, and the boys showed what they are capable of even without some of our key players,"

Kanazawa remarked after the game, praising his team's depth and resilience.

Meanwhile, in another key match, Kubota Spears edged out Kobelco Kobe Steelers 33-28 despite a red card to Akira Ieremia for dangerous play. The game saw robust competition and a nail-biting finish, with Haruto Kida’s second try sealing a hard-fought victory for the Spears. Amidst the intense clash, All Black Ardie Savea found himself yellow carded for dissent, a decision that momentarily shifted the game's momentum.

While the Spears extended their winning streak over the Steelers to seven games, the spotlight was also on All Black Anton Lienert Brown, who scored on his League One debut for Kobe. Despite the setback of Ieremia’s ejection, Kobe could not capitalize, allowing the Spears to maintain their lead until the final whistle.

The season opener has set a high bar for drama and excitement in the Japan Rugby League One, promising more thrilling rugby action as the season progresses.
