The Vodacom Bulls were left with their tails between their legs after a soul-crushing 50-5 defeat at the hands of the Northampton Saints in Sunday's Investec Champions Cup showdown. The clash, held at Franklin's Gardens, saw the Saints dominate from whistle to whistle, leaving the Bulls to ponder what might have been had they not rested several key Springboks.

It all began with a missed long-range penalty by the Bulls' flyhalf, Kade Wolhuter, just four minutes into the game. Northampton quickly capitalized on this slip, with Ollie Sleightholme breaking through to score the first try after some nimble teamwork. The Saints continued to press, and despite a brief flicker of hope when Stravino Jacobs sprinted for a try in the 23rd minute, the Bulls couldn’t turn the tide.

"We struggled to keep pace with their precision and speed,"

admitted a visibly frustrated Johan Ackermann, head coach of the Bulls.

After the break, the Saints piled on the misery. George Hendy scooped up a well-placed grubber from Fin Smith to notch his second try. The situation deteriorated further for the Bulls when prop Alulutho Tshakweni was yellow-carded, leading to a Saints' scoring spree that included tries from Henry Pollock and Alex Coles.

The final nails in the coffin were added by Sleightholme and Hendy, who completed his hat-trick, while Josh Kemeny rounded off the scoring fest. The Saints' kicker, Fin Smith, had a field day too, nailing five conversions to cap a stellar performance.

The result leaves the Bulls reeling with back-to-back defeats in the competition, severely denting their hopes for a turnaround when they face the Bristol Bears in January.

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Today, we were neither tough nor going,"

quipped Ackermann post-match, reflecting on the uphill battle that lies ahead for his squad.

With the Bulls back to the drawing board, and the Saints marching on, the Investec Champions Cup continues to deliver high drama and heartbreak in equal measure.

Northampton Saints: Tries: Ollie Sleightholme (2), George Hendy (3), Henry Pollock, Alex Coles, Josh Kemeny. Conversions: Fin Smith (5).

BULLS: Try: Stravino Jacobs.
