Pat Lam, the former head honcho of the Blues and now Bristol Bears’ director of rugby, didn’t mince words in his recent brutal takedown of New Zealand Rugby’s current woes. Speaking with DSPN's Martin Devlin, Lam laid bare the stark realities facing the once indomitable All Blacks, suggesting a severe reality check is overdue.

It’s no secret that New Zealand's rugby dominance has been on the wane since 2019, with both Scott Robertson and his predecessor Ian Foster at the helm during this period of decline. "New Zealand Rugby needs to wake up and smell the competition," Lam stated, questioning the level of accountability at NZR. According to Lam, the All Blacks are no longer the pace-setters in global rugby, a position now firmly held by the Springboks.

"South Africa is clearly the best team in the world,"

Lam pointed out that the rest of the world has not only caught up but in some cases, like South Africa under Rassie Erasmus, surged ahead. This shift demands a strategic rethink from New Zealand if they aim to claw back to the top.

The insularity of New Zealand’s rugby culture also came under Lam's scrutiny. He recalled an incident when All Blacks players Sevu Reece and Rieko Ioane were oblivious to rising international stars Tommy Freeman and Manny Feyi-Waboso. "It’s this narrow outlook that’s crippling our game," he remarked, suggesting that New Zealand’s rugby bubble has somewhat detached them from the global game’s evolving landscape.

Lam believes that embracing the underdog status could be New Zealand’s ticket back to supremacy. "We are not the best; we need to be the best," he emphasized, urging NZR to pivot their strategy towards innovation and broader awareness of international talent.

As the rugby world evolves, New Zealand finds itself at a critical juncture. The question now is whether the All Blacks can redefine their identity and strategy to rise once again, or if this period marks a longer-term decline from the zenith of world rugby. Only time and perhaps a heeding of Pat Lam's stark warning will tell.
