Jul 30, 2024, 00:40

I did not realize that Schoemacker got married and is now uses her married surname of Smith in rgistation fo the OG.   In any event as far as I an make out she did win the 100 meter breatstroke gold.   Great achievement, anyway,   Wanted to see the swim - but could not find it on the internet.   Can anybody help in that regard,

Jul 30, 2024, 00:43

It always amazes me how few medals SA win at the Olympics.

Jul 30, 2024, 01:49

How about 'em Aussies !?

Jul 30, 2024, 04:55

Fabulous win…winning a very competitive race with a perfect touch. She looked out of it at 30 metres. She now has a gold in the 100m to go along with her 200m gold in Tokyo. A competitor, perhaps she could help the Proteas as a sort of mental coach..

Very true Becs we pride ourselves on being good sports people yet fail to make an impression at the Olympics

Blaming a lack of funding is no excuse but it will be the excuse thrown out there

But I guess training full time vs part time does make a difference

Gold medal investment in our elite athletes

Media release

The Albanese Government has delivered the largest ever investment in Olympic and Paralympic sports to help our brilliant athletes achieve glory on world stages.

A record $283 million in new money will flow to our elite athletes, coaches and support staff over the next two years in a historic show of support on the path to Brisbane 2032.

This investment represents a 50 per cent increase on the previous Government’s 2021- 2022 high performance funding.

It also represents a doubling of the investment the previous Government made for Paralympic athletes.

This new funding is in addition to our $102.8 million annual grant funding and brings the Government’s total high-performance investment to $489m over two years.

The funding package for Paralympians is the biggest ever, as the Albanese Government addresses systemic and structural barriers to performance for para athletes that had been ignored for too long.

The investment will be a major boost for Aussie spirits ahead of Paris next month, and will strengthen Australia’s hopes for gold at LA in 2028, Brisbane in 2032, Winter and Commonwealth Games events.

The funding will create more opportunities and better development pathways for high performance athletes to thrive while inspiring the next generation of Australians to be more active.

The historic investment includes:

  • An increase of $17.6 million to the Direct Athlete Investment Support Grants (dAIS) program to address cost of living pressures for athletes.
  • A major uplift in direct sport funding.
  • Access to more domestic and international competitions to regularly compete against the world’s best in preparation for major sporting events.
  • Extra training, well-being and preparation support, including access to world-leading coaches and performance support staff.

Investment in our Paralympic athletes and sports will more than double, with $54.9 million in additional funding - the biggest ever Paralympic spend by an Australian Government.

The funding increase will deliver better classification opportunities, access to fit-for-purpose training environments and specialised coaching and performance support.

Quotes attributable to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese

“We’re cheering on all our athletes heading to Paris. We are so proud of them and my Government is backing Aussie athletes with record funding.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Sport Anika Wells

“This is the biggest investment any government has made in our Olympic and Paralympic sports and will help athletes achieve glory on world stages.

“Today’s commitment brings the Albanese Government’s sport announcements in this Budget to $753.1m, including the $249.7 million investment to revitalise the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) campus in Canberra.

“We have also committed $200m to the Play Our Way fund, the biggest infrastructure program ever for women and girls sport, and invested more than $20m in the Netball World Cup and Women’s Asian Cup.

“We’re giving our future Olympic and Paralympic teams what they need to succeed with upgraded training facilities, the best coaching and support staff and cost-of-living assistance.

“We’ll all be cheering on the Green and Gold in a few weeks when Paris 24 begins and this funding again proves the Albanese Government is committed to sport – from playground to podium.”

Quotes attributable to Australian Olympic Committee President Ian Chesterman

“We have said many times that a successful home Games needs a successful home team, so this injection of funds at this time is fundamentally important to that outcome.

“The additional money direct to the sports is very good news while the lift in dAIS funding to cover more athletes is critical to giving them the confidence that they can focus on putting in the huge amount of work that is necessary to represent Australia on the international stage.

“It further builds on the investment in the AIS announced recently by Sports Minister Wells to again make that facility a hub of sporting excellence.

“The Prime Minister clearly gets what the Olympic sports do for this country so we thank him his commitment to helping our sports and our athletes.

“This funding increase is a very important start to help our athletes be their best, inspire the generations to come and to build a strong sports system to support them all.

“The AOC also welcomes the lift in Paralympic funding which will benefit the sports which run both Olympic and Paralympic programs.”

Quotes attributable to Paralympics Australia President Alison Creagh

"This new investment from the Federal Government will bring about monumental generational change for Para-sport in Australia.

“Paralympics Australia commends the Federal Government, in particular the Prime Minister and Federal Sports Minister, for their visionary leadership and for recognising the immense impact that this investment can deliver.

"Since 2000, Australia's investment in Para-sport has fallen well behind many of our rivals, allowing them to catch up. This funding marks a much-needed reset, positioning Australia to regain its competitive edge in time for the Paralympic Games in 2028 and our Games at home in 2032.”

Agreed on Marchand…Pan Zhanle who smashed the 100 metres by 0.4 seconds perhaps the single   most impressive  performance.

Aug 01, 2024, 23:50

And now we have a man boxing against a woman - what the fuck is this world coming to?

Aug 02, 2024, 00:10

Agree a 100% Saffolk …that Algerian is a dude, so go fight a dude!! I feel for the Italian woman. It’s because that shameless Guy will get his ass whipped if he has to fight another guy!

So now they cheat because of this Gender nonsense allowed by dumb fucking political people!! It’s fucking disgusting and a Disgrace…There is only 2 genders, Man or Woman. Case closed.

Aug 02, 2024, 00:13

Yes guys, that Algerian is a man and they’ve just condoned him beating up a woman in the name of sport.

It’s a disgrace.

Aug 02, 2024, 00:45

Absolutely disgusting

Aug 02, 2024, 01:09

It beggars belief, it really does.

Aug 02, 2024, 05:05

Outrageous & hopefully the fallout from this will result in a reversal in this disgusting bollocks.

Aug 02, 2024, 09:47

So now they cheat because of this Gender nonsense allowed by dumb fucking political people!! It’s fucking disgusting and a Disgrace…There is only 2 genders, Man or Woman. Case closed.

Its more complicated than that.

You guys are aware that neither Imane Khelif or Taiwanese boxer Li Yu-ting are actually trans?

They have always competed in the female category and have done so for years without issue, passing all eligibility and criteria tests up till failing a test by the IBA last year which apparently revealed the presence of the male XY chromosomes.

The IOC have accused the IBA of making arbitrary changes to their testing system and not providing details on what the tests involved.

There is also accusations going round of bad blood between the the Russian led IBA and the IOC, considering athletes are banned from competing under the Russian flag.

The two competitor's did meet the eligibility requirement for competing in the Olympics with Imane Khelif having competed in the Tokyo Olympics where she placed 5th.

So the issue here isn't that these two are trans people, but is more likely a question of DSD or differences in sex development, which can result in outwardly female individuals having male chromosomes or anatomy.

Take the case of Caster Semenya the runner who won two Gold medals. She was considered female at birth, but has the intersex condition called 5-ARD something that only the male XY chromosome is affected by. She has a vagina, but also undescended testicles and her testosterone levels are considered in the male range. She didn't know about this until tests revealed it and only found out the same time everyone else did.

With the current two competitors we don't know what their medical history is.  Its likely these athletes outwardly appear female, where brought up as female, consider themselves female and their family and friends consider them female. They may have a form of DSD, which they may or may not be aware of. DSD can vary in how significant an affect it has on the person's autonomy. If they do have DSD, then it raises the question of whether they should be allowed compete or not on the grounds of whether they have an unfair advantage or not, but should they be penalised for something that occurred naturally. Its a complicated issue.

However people need to lay of the argument that this is two men pretending to be women or believe its case of the IOC caving into pressure to allow trans people to compete.

Aug 02, 2024, 10:12

Bullshit that is no woman it has man written all over it

Aug 02, 2024, 13:32

A biological male can never be female.

Aug 02, 2024, 14:13

This is the sick insane WOKE world wide movement screwing up everything in their quest to futher their disgusting morals.

Yes I agree becs and no female has a set of b---s as well.

An absolute disgrace to humanity and the Olympics.

Shocking and an illustration of just how low the human race is able to go.

Wake up folks.

Aug 02, 2024, 14:16

So why doesn’t the organisation’s make a league for these DSD people or trans ? Problem solved and they can have there own little club where they can do what they want to. Keep them separate from real woman!!

Fact is this Algerian is not a biological woman and should not be fighting or competing against any real woman!

What about that trans gender swimmer Lia Thomas competing against biological woman?? Riley Gaines luckily stood up against that…yet again if you were born a man and you want to be a women, then do what you want…. But don’t expect to be treated as a biological woman.

You still a man with a man’s body and his strength , although you had a operation to change your sex organs….there again give them there own club and keep them separate from real women or men!

Then there is also a trend where men with male organs can now identify as women or a biological Women can identify as a Man, just because they feel like it??

In America these kind of men that are jailed but identify as a woman all of a sudden, we’re allowed to go to female prisons….what happened was that these men raped some of the female prisoners!

This shit is sick and shows the decay of society and like I said before, sick fucking Woke people in charge are allowing this weird shit to happen…get rid of them!!

Aug 02, 2024, 14:26

Might not have been born a man but clearly the poor thing has more man in her than woman and for that reason has a clear advantage over woman and therefore should not be allowed to compete against woman

Simple solution is to have a separate category for this class of individual to compete it. It could include trans and DSD individuals

Aug 02, 2024, 14:27

Spot on Becs - never

Aug 02, 2024, 14:47

Create 3 categories:

1. Men's

2. Women's

3. Open Division (Anyone can enter, including Beeno1)

Aug 02, 2024, 16:08

A biological male can never be female.

Is Imane Khelif male, if so what makes him male? Is it simple the presence of the X Chromosome?

So why doesn’t the organisation’s make a league for these DSD people or trans ? Problem solved and they can have there own little club where they can do what they want to. Keep them separate from real woman!!

Because there isn't enough of them to have their own competition.  There has only been one ever trans athlete to compete at the Olympics' and there is no trans people competing in the Paris Olympics, and just two that may be people with DSD or are intersex, both of them boxers but in different weight categories so they wouldn't be fighting against each other anyway. With DSD there is also the matter in that it can manifest itself in different ways affecting some people in a very minor way to having much more significant affects on others, so then if you where considering that there should be a DSD category only, how much does a person have to be affected by DSD before they are put into that category, who decides that. Complete rabbit hole. In affect separate categories for trans or DSD people would be a defacto ban.

Fact is this Algerian is not a biological woman and should not be fighting or competing against any real woman!

We don't know that's a fact. The President of the IBA told Russian state media that the tests had proved Imane Khelif has XY Chromosomes, but the testing methodology was never stated nor any evidence published proving that. Why would one favour the IBA's unknown testing system over the IOC's system?

What about that trans gender swimmer Lia Thomas competing against biological woman?? Riley Gaines luckily stood up against that…yet again if you were born a man and you want to be a women, then do what you want…. But don’t expect to be treated as a biological woman.

Riley Gaines is entitled to her opinion and she's not the only athlete with that view, but many other female athletes have came out in support of Lia Thomas. Other's took the view that trans women could compete as long as they could demonstrate they lost there sex linked male puberty advantage.

I note Riley Gaines is also against trans people taking part in women's chess competitions. Someone want to explain how a trans women would have an unfair advantage here? Kinda suggests Gaines isn't really concerned about fairness but just doesn't like trans people in general.

Then there is also a trend where men with male organs can now identify as women or a biological Women can identify as a Women, just because they feel like it??

Well its more than they just feel like it. It's not like they wake up one day and go ah you know what I feel like being trans. For most its probably a slow process of realisation that happens over time. Ultimately I don't care what someone wants to identify as. They can identify as a carrot for all I care. It's none of my business. When it comes to them competing in sport I would be favour of them competing in cases where their not advantaged by the gender they had before transitioning.

In America these kind of men that are jailed but identify as a woman all of a sudden, we’re allowed to go to female prisons….what happened was that these men raped some of the female prisoners!

Searching around I can see there is one reported case of that happening, where a man pretended to be a trans women and allegedly raped a female inmate.. Believe a court case is ongoing.  There is nothing to suggest this is a widespread occurrence. And if that one case is true its not reflective of trans people. That wasn't a trans person committing a crime.

Aug 02, 2024, 16:15

Might not have been born a man but clearly the poor thing has more man in her than woman and for that reason has a clear advantage over woman and therefore should not be allowed to compete against woman.

Several of her previous opponents have come out in support of her.

Her fight record stands at 51 fights with 42 wins (4 of which where disqualified after the IBA test) and 9 losses. Only 6 of her 42 wins where by knock out/technical knock out.  Not sure if its a record that indicates she has a clear advantage.

Simple solution is to have a separate category for this class of individual to compete it. It could include trans and DSD individuals

Too few trans or people with DSD for a separate category to be viable.

Aug 02, 2024, 16:36

Then they should excluded totally

Angela Carina the Italian boxer who withdraw 46 seconds into her fight with Imane Khelif now wants to apologise to her.

Aug 02, 2024, 17:10

Just because the Italian boxer wishes to apologise will not make a difference.

Agree with Saffex's last posting.

I feel for folks that are born under such circumstances but that does not mean that we have to lower the qualifications or rules for anything to accomodate them.

What about the folks born with a physical handicap, they have a similar games so let these unfortunate go to those games.

These two unfortunate boxers will never overcome this bad call by the Olympic officials and will be ridiculed through no fault of their making.

Shame on the Olympic body.

Aug 02, 2024, 17:39

It’s not its fault that it’s allowed to fight a woman - blame the Olympic committee for sanctioning it - stupid pricks

Aug 02, 2024, 21:51

Perhaps an Imane Infusion ice cream flavour might sell out Dave, don’t knock it. But I have a question Anger, how should we properly address you?

Aug 02, 2024, 22:30

Dave

The unfortuate  situation is that the Governments such as the US G oernment oenly accpted and enhance it in the uSA - where the present Govenmnt stated there ar 52 gendercategories in the USA and they must be aaaccommodated n Women sport and all they have to do is to declare themslves as women and they can compete in vomens sport.   When that happens the men can use thee change roonm and toilet facilities and the found themselves with men showing their male organs.

That pilosophy has found its way into all Democratic countriand npthjing people used to hink ar now unaccptable

Aug 02, 2024, 22:54

I feel for folks that are born under such circumstances but that does not mean that we have to lower the qualifications or rules for anything to accomodate them.

Who said the qualification or rules where lowered for them?

What about the folks born with a physical handicap, they have a similar games so let these unfortunate go to those games.

So let me get this straight, you think athletes with DSD have a physical advantage over athletes who are not affected by DSD and your solution is to send people you consider to have a physical advantaged over regulars athletes to compete with athletes who are handicapped.

These two unfortunate boxers will never overcome this bad call by the Olympic officials and will be ridiculed through no fault of their making.

Shame on the Olympic body.

How do you know any of that?

It’s not its fault that it’s allowed to fight a woman

Not its fault?....."its".... "its"....fuck me.  We know are talking about a human being here, not a little toy action figure. They are not a fucking its. Imagine just for a moment they where a family member of yours, would you like people to refer to them as "it".

blame the Olympic committee for sanctioning it - stupid pricks

I hate to break it to you but this is a way more complicated issue than "I think she looks like a man, therefore she must be a man". With that in mind  might not want to label everyone a stupid prick just because they don't agree with you.

But I have a question Anger, how should we properly address you

Stav will do fine.

Aug 02, 2024, 23:28

How many DSD, Transgender and the ones wanting to identify as a different sex, are there in the world? It’s most probably more than a 1000 …Gays and Lesbians can join them then they will definitely be enough….call it LGBTQIA+ Identity Crisis Fairy Olympics : ) They can have Rainbow costumes, special books with pop up pictures etc etc.. Problem solved and everyone is Happy: )

Aug 03, 2024, 16:33

Worth reading the Barney Ronay article before commenting…thanks Blob.

Aug 03, 2024, 17:07

His article just makes it more clearer that these two are different….Hence the very important argument to have different sport competitions.

If both of these so called women have more manly chromosomes, it means that there bodies have or produce more testosterone than a female…that is why men are stronger because they produce up to 20 times more testosterone.

“Testosterone helps build muscle by generating proteins, which then increases muscle strength,” explains Matthew Accetta, MS, ACSM-CEP, CSCS*D, CSPS, an exercise physiologist at HSS.05

Man look at that picture of this Imane fellow and tell me that there is not more man in there? He /she,s body build is also bigger/Manlier than the Italian women, and stronger than a Woman with only female Chromosomes.

Aug 05, 2024, 06:00

Very tight 100 metres. Lyles who was behind after 30 metres gets gold with superior closing speed and a better lean. Simbine who ran superbly misses bronze by 1/100th of a second,  Hell of a race!

Bolt’s record is still beyond mere mortals.

Aug 05, 2024, 07:08

Aug 05, 2024, 08:41

1/100th of a second ................ what's that, a blink of an eye ?

Aug 05, 2024, 10:37

Yeah poor Simbine was a blink away from winning it but got nothing in the end which shows how close it was

And at 30 that was probably his last shot at it

Aug 05, 2024, 20:00

The fastest human….still for me the ultimate event. I remember in 71, having just arrived in the States, watching the 71 Super Bowl. The Colts were leading the Cowboys deep into the fourth quarter, there were seconds left…

‘There is only one thing for the Cowboys  to do’ said  the commentator, ‘get the ball to world’s fastest human’. He was referring to Bob Hayes who won Olympic gold in 1964 and then got recruited by the Cowboys.

Bob had bulked up a lot so he wasn’t the world’s fastest any more…but still very  quick. Sadly the Cowboys had no passing skills and we never saw what Bob could do.

Aug 05, 2024, 20:05

I see that in 88 when Lewis won his time was 9.92 sec, the slowest time in the final yesterday was 9.91 sec

Aug 05, 2024, 22:37

In 1924 Harold Abraham’s won the Olympics in 10.6 seconds….in 2024 Alfred won the woman’s 100 in 10.74. One hundred years from now in the Paris games of 2124, does a woman run the 100 metres in 9.8?

Only 1,497 humans have ever broken the 4-minute mile — and I’m one of them

'As I type this, my heart has been beating faster, just thinking about that race'

By Nathan Brannen for CBC Sports

There are few events in the sport of track and field that people understand like the mile.

Even people who know very little about track, know that it takes an extraordinary effort to break four minutes over the 1,609-metre race. The mystery surrounding this distance is as alive today as it was in 1954 when Roger Banister first broke the magical four-minute barrier.

Nathan Brannen had lofty goals even as a high school runner. (Jeff McIntosh/Canadian Press)

Becs, I was discreet, never mentioned anyone by name ............ although Mozart suggests he's a fraction over 5'9".

South Africa takes second in the 4X100 men’s relay….very solid performance. The Proteas’ WC choke  is nothing compared to the US relay team in the Olympics, who blew the baton pass again. Hell ten year old kids can do this!

I can't find a video of the 4x100 relay...can anyone help?
