It was a heart-stopping showdown at Faure Stadium this past Saturday where Paarl Boys’ High snatched the crown of South Africa’s unofficial top school rugby team from Paarl Gimnasium. With only minutes to spare, Boys’ High, trailing 33-21, pulled off a nail-biting comeback to clinch a 35-33 victory, marking their first triumph over their fierce rivals since 2022.

The game, a rollercoaster of emotions, saw Boys’ High's Tristan Joubert piercing through the defense to score a pivotal try in the 66th minute. Iwan Jordaan, with nerves of steel, followed up with a critical conversion that ultimately sealed the deal for Boishaai. This duo turned despair into joy, flipping the script when all seemed lost.

"It was a test of character, and the boys showed what they're made of. This win is a testament to their grit and determination,"

a delighted Boishaai coach remarked after the game.

Despite the loss, Paarl Gimnasium’s SA Schools centre Markus Muller was a standout performer, scoring a try and contributing massively with his boot, slotting three conversions and four penalties. His efforts kept Gimmies in the driver's seat for the majority of the game.

The scorecard was abuzz with activity throughout the match. For Paarl Boys’ High, alongside Joubert, tries came from Jeneal Davids, Gershom Pieters, Kobus Wilken, and Cole Moultrie, with Jordaan perfect from the tee, knocking over all five conversions.

On the flip side, Gimnasium’s tally included tries from Muller, Hendre van der Westerhuizen, and Jean Dreyer, with Muller adding the extra points and keeping the scoreboard ticking with his precise penalty kicks.

This clash was more than just a game; it was a dramatic saga that unfolded with intensity and passion, reflecting the rich rugby heritage of these two schools. As the dust settles, Paarl Boys’ High will savor this victory, a sweet reminder of their resilience and spirit, while Paarl Gimnasium will no doubt look to bounce back stronger. In schoolboy rugby, as in life, it’s all about the comeback!
