The Saturday night game emanated from Goodison Park this weekend with Everton playing host to Chelsea. While the Toffees may have been the underdogs, it was a closer affair than many expected with Chelsea just about managing to edge past the hosts with a 1-0 win courtesy of Jorginho’s first half penalty.

Today, we’re going to take a look at a few things we learned from the encounter.

Chelsea keep it calm

There was nothing particularly over the top about Chelsea’s performance in the sense that they kept themselves quite reserved and aimed to pick Everton off at will – almost as if they were a boxer jabbing their way to victory. It feels as if there are still a few gears they need to get to in order to reach the very top and challenge for the title, but you’d have to think that will come with time.

Injuries overshadow

Ben Godfrey suffered a nasty injury in the first half that we now know is a fractured leg, leaving many to wonder how long he’s going to be out of action for. In addition to that, Yerry Mina also went off injured, bringing forward even more issues for Frank Lampard than he already had. It’s a shame, too, because the way they played would indicate there are plenty of reasons to feel positive.

Work to be done

Thomas Tuchel and Frank Lampard both have solid squads at their disposal but the summer transfer window is still open for a reason. They need to get a few more bodies in if only because of the toll this season is going to take and with so much uncertainty regarding what they’re going to actually be aiming for in the months ahead, we’d say it’s crucial for them to think about their long-term plans.
