Cape Town - Klerksdorp has produced its fair share of sporting royalty. The late Phil Masinga made his way into the world via Klerksdorp, and would play 58 times for Bafana and enjoyed success with Leeds United in the English Premier League, with Salernitana and Bari in Italy’s Serie A, and with Jomo Cosmos and Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa.
Then there’s Australia’s top order batting sensation Marnus Labuschagne who, in December 2021, was rated the No 1 batter in the ICC Test batting rankings, and who in 2020 was named the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year, Australia’s Test Player of the Year and one of the five Cricketers of the Year by Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.
Labuschagne, 27 years old, averages 60.04 Test cricket.
Queensland is his home, but Klerksdorp is where it all started for Labuschagne, whose family moved to Australia when he was 10 years old.
Labuschagne has played 21 Tests and batted in 36 innings. He has scored six centuries and 12 half centuries, which means he gets to 50 or more every second time he takes guard in a Test match. That is a super statistic.
Six years after Labuschagne took his first breath in Klerksdorp, enter Marcus Jansen and his twin brother, Duan.
Jansen in the past fortnight has introduced himself to the global cricketing audience in the most fiery way. He has bowled with heart, pace and with passion. He has taken 12 wickets in two Tests against Indian’s finest, and at the Wanderers he strode to the crease in the first innings batting at No 7 and immediately took aim at India’s potent pace attack, especially Jasprit Bumrah, who is the spearhead of the Indian attack and one of the finest international new-ball bowlers.
Bumrah, a veteran when compared to the 21-year-old Jansen, welcomed the youngster to Test cricket with a barrage of short deliveries. Jansen took blows to the arm, the shoulder and the upper body, but he kept swinging and never took a step backwards or towards square leg. He stood every inch as tall as his 2.06 metres, and the quicker Bumrah bowled, the stronger Jansen's response.
I absolutely loved this cameo of a battle, and it escalated to an even more passionate and fiery exchange when Bumrah batted. Jansen immediately went short and into the body. He struck Bumrah on the upper arm, the shoulder and the body.
The result was a mid-pitch showdown and plenty of spicy chat.
This was Test cricket, in which two players refused to concede anything.
I absolutely loved it and I loved the fire in Jansen’s belly, his confidence and his mental strength in wanting to go toe to toe with one of the best teams in the world.
Many a pretender has promised, but never delivered in the all-rounder role for the Proteas in the past few years. To have a left-arm quick who bats right-handed and is very good in the field is gold, but add in the mental resolve that Jansen displayed at Centurion and the Wanderers and the kid is closer to platinum than gold.
Jansen, in his first two Tests, has already delivered on his promise. His impact has been immediate. He takes wickets and breaks partnerships. His lean frame could be misinterpreted as physically fragile, but there is nothing vulnerable about his heart, his head and his approach to Test cricket.
Many talented all-rounders have played Test cricket for the Proteas, but as many have failed to cope with the mental demands of the game’s highest level.
Jansen is the exception. The tougher the moment, the bigger his response.
He has shown he can bowl, but in just 20 first-class matches, his five half centuries, which includes a career high of 87 and an unbeaten 70 a month ago when playing for South Africa A against India A, proves he can bat.
For now, he is a left-arm fast bowler who is comfortable as a right-handed lower-order batsman. In time, he will be a Test all-rounder, capable of doing damage with the ball and the bat.
Jansen is rare in what he offers the Proteas in terms of his cricketing gifts, but it is his mental resolve that can’t be coached. Some players are born to play cricket and others are born to play Test cricket. Jansen is of the latter elite.
Jansen, in his Test debut at Centurion, got five wickets across the two innings, including that of India’s captain, Virat Kohli.
The significance of his bowling effort was that it put Jansen among names like Allan Donald, Lance Klusener and Vernon Philander as players to have done this on Test debut for the Proteas.
That’s pretty special company for Jansen, but not unexpected from a player who is pretty special.

This kid is special, still a bit rough around the edges with regards to his bowling but he more than makes up for that with the amount of wickets he's taking, the world will be at his feet with a bit of experience. I'd like to think he'd be pretty handy with the willow as well and if he is then he alongside of Cameron Green will be the next best thing. He also has attitude, fire in the belly as the saying goes....gotta love it. Not sure how our resident Know-all could call him a Dud but if that's how newbie Duds perform then give me 11 of them. Also interesting is that he'll be bowling on a completely different wicket to what he's experienced on the highveld, there'll be some adjustment needed, Kohli believes Marco can bowl on any wicket, I'm not about to doubt the great Kohli who to his credit spotted Marco's talent and drafted him onto the international stage long before CSA woke up to his presence and ability. I daresay if it wasn't for Kohli then Marco would still only be playing franchise cricket.
So then my Go-To 4 players are Rabada, Jansen, Maharaj and Markram with a useful contribution from Bavuma.
I bemoan the absence of Janneman Malan, give me strength how long do we have to wait for the obvious to happen.
Umm, aunty Dentsie, I was talking him up during his debut Test Series, so no idea what then you're on about.
If you paid attention to the title of the post...IE a replacement for Philander, then it would make sense to you. Because you're not going to be making calls like that before the guy has been tested for a period.

No slight on giraffe 1.0 but 2.0 seems to be the more intelligent and handy cricketer.
I think Jansen has impressed all of us since his debut, and rightly so.
He offers real variation with his height and being left handed. At the same time, he also swings the ball considerably and is considered an all rounder.
Morkel, for me anyway, through lack of accuracy or information, never seemed to settle properly into the uncomfortable length that would have best suited him and which would have seen him take many more wickets than he did. He was always a door or two too full.
Jansen seems to understand his game very well already. The swing that he extracted to remove Root in the 1st innings was phenomenal. Delivering it from that height and getting the ball to hoop like it did, absolutely menacing. Being that tall should mean you’re a straight up-and-down bowler…Root would probably have agreed prior to said dismissal.
Is it only me that sees a bit of Mostert in him? That lanky son of a mechanic who doesn’t know when to quit.
Very happy with the find and credit to the selectors on this one. As much as we deride them most of the time, one has to give credit where is due.

The problem as I see it is that there isn't a bowling coach in the country to take him to another level.
Thought the same of Morne and I strongly believe it wasn't until Otis Gibson came along that we saw the best of him but by then he was at the end of his career. I felt very frustrated seeing his huge potential not being exploited for its full potential.

Morkel never bowled how anybody wanted him to. Instead of peppering the hip and chest he mostly bowled too full.
I think Jansen is smarter than that.
But Jansen has a bat also, and that puts him out ahead of most of the contenders because it places pressure on the opening and 1st change bowlers to do their bit. You don't want to have Jansen hitting 40 runs and getting more wickets than you.

I think he’s won us all over pretty easily. Guy just looks like he has a great attitude. Nice to have a player that we’re both excited about and who is delivering.

There's two things that worries me about Marco, one I've already mentioned the other is how he's volume of bowling is managed in the red ball version. I'm not fussed as to how he's used in the shortened versions of the game but it's noticeable that in the red ball version he as an Allrounder bowls as many balls as the frontline bowlers. That to me is an overkill. There's no way he can bowl that many overs and be fresh enough to put up a healthy score with the bat over a lengthy period in the middle.

Unfortunately the batting line up ahead of him has failed most of the time and he has on more than one game had to add a bit of respectability to the score.
But with the new coach I do not expect any changes in the squad that said we will just have to endure the slide and trust that Jansen continues with his progress as an allrounder in the tests.
What a find he has turned out to be for SA cricket.
Must add that I think Miller has to Captain the 20 over SA team with his display of capitancy and batting in the current SA 20 games.

Really liking the look of Jansen.
He's probably going to bowl a bit quicker over the years to come and I'm sure he's impressed most of us with his batting.
Very much enjoying his batting in the T20 competition. Must say, he's been hitting some huge ones and doing so with an element of poise about him. He's up there for me with Brevis, Malan and Rickleton, in terms of players that I'm excited to see get on with it.
